Semester 1

Qasidah Burdah with English translations was used as a reference for the sessions. The first four sessions follow closely the chapters in the Burdah while the last three sessions were based on reflection letters sent in by the participants titled “Letters of the Heart” series.

Lesson 1: Starting on the Right Foot

This session kickstarted our G2G sessions for the semester. With reference to chapter 1 of the Burdah which focuses on the love the author (Imam Busiri) had for the Prophet ﷺ, the audience were brought on a journey together to discover the love for the best of all creations, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and also learning of its importance.

It was emphasised that one of the etiquettes of a seeker is to place intentions. The audience then recited the “Intention of the Servant of Mercy” taught and led by Ustaz Muhsin.

Lesson 2: Awareness of the Self

With a focus on the diseases of the heart, this lesson aimed to identify them within ourselves, and on ridding ourselves of them. This was based on chapter 2 of the Burdah, concerning the nafs. From it, the audience was guided to a path of self awareness, which revealed itself as a means to increase our Taqwa (God-consciousness) by allowing us to be mindful of our thoughts and actions, therefore restraining the nafs.

The key to awareness comes from making Istighfar, which the audience recited together in a heartfelt moment, led by Ustaz Muhsin. Though it was a simple practice, the magnitude of its effects and the knowledge that Allah ﷻ is Most Merciful and Most Forgiving remained in our hearts long after the session.

Lesson 3: My Role Model

Based on chapter 3 of the Burdah which touches on the maqam (station) of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, this session aims to highlight the elevated status of our Beloved ﷺ and how he ﷺ is the most exemplary person both inwardly and outwardly for all of mankind to follow.

In today’s age of fitna (slander), it is dire that we are grounded with proper guidance and equipped with upright individuals whom we can look up to and who follow and inherit from the ultimate role model, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Through this session, the audience is exposed to beautiful yet relevant stories about his ﷺ companions and the saints of Allah ﷻ that can be applied to the lives of the audiences in today’s context.

Lesson 4: Striving Ahead

At this juncture in time, most of the audience members were faced with the difficult challenge of managing schoolwork, exams, commitments and responsibilities. The fourth session thus aimed to sustain motivation, and to find strength from the religion.

Based on chapters 4 and 5 of the Burdah, which were regarding the events during the birth of Rasulullah ﷺ and his miracles, we returned to the true purpose of what we are all striving for: to be a humble servant of Allah ﷻ by following Rasulullah ﷺ, and more specifically in this context, his responsibility ﷺ. This beautiful reminder provided the audience with an important outlook on their tasks, that is, to do them for the sake of Allah ﷻ.

Lessons 5 - 7: Lessons of the Heart

Addressing 3 diffferent issues: Relationships, Having Faith and Gratitude, these lessons were considered ‘Letters of the Heart’ sessions which has a bottom-up approach that engages the audience to send in their very own personal reflections.
