Majlis Khatmul Quran, the first ever brothers initiative organized by NUSMS took place on 4th of Zulhijjah 1434/ 8th October 2013  after Maghrib at Masjid Tentera Di-Raja. It was a beautiful event, which took place on a blessed date, on the first 10 days of Zulhijjah whereby our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

There is no deed that is better in the sight of Allah or more greatly rewarded than a good deed done in the (first) ten days of Al-Adha”. It was asked, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, unless a man goes out himself for Jihad taking his wealth with him and does not come back with anything.” – Narrated by Al-Bukhari

Equipped with the above words of motivation to perform good deeds, NUSMS set out to spread goodness during these ten days and thought to themselves, “What better way to do spread goodness than to organize an event which would bring brothers from all over NUS to come to the mosque, make iktikaf in it, and recite the Words of Allah??” At the same time, it was an awesome opportunity for the brothers in NUS to build ukhuwah with each other through a common activity; recitation of the Quran.

Each brother was requested to read one juzuk of the Quran in the time span of approximately one hour. For those who were not fluent in their recitation, they could split one juzuk with others to lessen the amount of recitation. Participants were requested to fill in a Google spreadsheet with their names and the juzuk that they would like to recite. Closer to the event, the organizers realized that there was a chance that we may not be able to gather at least thirty brothers for thirty juzuk so there was a need to do some damage control!

An hour or two before the event, approximately six NUS brothers gathered at Masjid Tentera and started the recitation of their individual parts in advance so as to take on more juzuk during the event itself. It was an excellent solution! Not only did we  complete all 30 juzuk within the day itself, the brothers have gained more good deeds than anyone else for reciting more than one juzuk!

As the event began to unfold, blessings upon blessings rained down upon us. At the beginning of the event, we had unexpected individuals turn up for Majlis Khatmul Quran and we realized that the support was such that the same juzuk may be read twice, masha’Allah. Next, we had Ustaz Ahmad Helmy delivered a  valuable talk to the brothers on the Virtues of the Quran. Then, we did Isyak Jemaah prayers together followed by a sharing on ‘Tips on How to Keep the Qur’an Close to You’ by Brother Hamdan, an recent graduate from NUS who has been memorizing the Quran ever since his junior college days. The event was really a rare and beautiful sight; after all, it isn’t often that you see Masjid Tentera so packed during Isyak prayers!

We then moved on to the highlight of the event, the recitation itself. SubhanAllah, the soft murmuring being heard from the recitation of the Quran from our NUS brothers gave a serene and cooling feel to the main prayer hall of Masjid Tentera. Fifteen mins passed and brothers were seen full of khusyu’ in their recitation. Past thirty minutes, the soft murmurs in recitation had turned into soft background music for all. A quarter to an hour passed and some brothers had already finished their recitations and some were helping out the slower readers. By the hour mark, everyone had finished! and The doa Khatmul Quran was then recited by various brothers taking turns to recite parts of the doa. We then made doa for the people who went for hajj and ended off the majlis with words of encouragement from the organizers to have more brothers’ events in the near future.  All in all, it was an awesome experience that would be remembered for a very long time.
