ASTRO-Ordinaire 2012

Astronomy Night
Location: NUS school field
Date: 9th – 10th May 2012

Coming this 9th May, NUSMS will be organizing an inaugural event pertaining to the cosmos.

The motivation behind such an event is the fact that most students have the competent mathematical knowledge. Therefore, we like to harness this untapped area of knowledge where participants will be able to appreciate in greater depths some of the more involved calculations used in determining routines taken for granted such as Solat Timings, Qiblah Finding, Calendar Calculations.

Of greater importance of course is the realization that draws upon many verses of the Quran such as ‘Kullun fii falakin yasbahuun/Everything in the cosmos sing His Praises’ and ‘wa sakhkharalakum maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ardhi jami’an, inna fii dzalika la aayaatin li qaumin yatafakkaruun 45:13 And He has subjected to you, as from Him, all that is in the heavens and on earth: Behold, in that are Signs indeed for those who reflect.’

Astronomy night will be held over-night, with an outdoor session so that participants can get to experience some hands-on learning, looking through the telescopes for star gazing and identifying constellations. Also, there would be a talk given by Ustaz Firdaus Yahya where he would be able to share with us the linkages of astronomy and Islam.  More excitingly, there will be a wonderful camaraderie session accompanied with sumptuous BBQ to enjoy where!

We hope that you will make doa for the event to be a success and would benefit us to be appreciative of the wonders created by Allah and more importantly, to be closer to Him.

So do look forward to updates pertaining to this beneficial, knowledge-building, fun-filled event!
